Wreath laid on Lisburn war grave

Laying a wreath on one of the Lisburn War Graves, maintained by the Council is Councillor Jenny Palmer, Chair of Lisburn City Councils Environmental Services Committee who was joined by Retired Major Mr John Jamieson, Branch Chairman of the Royal British Legion, Lisburn Branch.

Mrs Palmer said: “The Council will continue to maintain the war graves for the Commonwealth War Grave Commission in Lisburn Cemetery to demonstrate our continuing recognition of the sacrifice made by so many, including the families and generations of families of those who lost loved ones in World Wars.

“This year is the centenary of the outbreak of World War One and is an appropriate and poignant time to remember the fallen. “This old graveyard, with monuments to many well-known Lisburn families includes the graves of men who served with the Royal Engineers, Royal Irish Fusiliers, the Pioneer Corps and the Royal Irish Rifles.

“I felt it appropriate to mark the occasion with the laying of a wreath on one of those graves in conjunction with the Royal British Legion.”

Mr Jamieson said: “This is a lovely old graveyard and it is very well maintained so I would like to extend my thanks to Councillor Palmer and the Council.

“I am delighted that Lisburn City Council will continue to maintain these graves which are such an important piece of our history and heritage.”
