WW1 Sculpture Fund nears target thanks to fundraiser

Speaking after the latest collection Appeal Co-ordinator Samuel McClements said: “The appeal got off to a great start when it was launched in June of this year when Ballymoney Council donated £20,000. Since then a number of fundraising events and collections have taken place.

“This latest contribution from customers of McCool’s Supervalu takes us close to our £30,000 target for the sculpture.

“Thanks go to Peter McCool for kindly allowing us to collect and to his generous customers.”

Sammy tells also explained that work on the sculpture is well advanced as are plans for the accommodation works at the Cenotaph where the sculpture will be installed before the annual Remembrance Day this year.

The fund will also benefit from a street collection which took place in the town on Saturday and a Night At The Races at Stranocum Orange Hall on Saturday night.

This is followed by a further fundraising Film to be screened in Ballymoney Town hall on Wednesday night (17th September, 7.30 p.m.)

The 1999 independent film, directed by highly regarded novelist, is set in a British army trench during the 48 hours leading up to the Battle of the Somme in the summer of 1916.

During that battle, Britain suffered 60,000 casualties in what is still considered its worst military disaster.

Tickets, £3, are available from the Visitor Information Centre at the Town Hall. (over 15 years only)
