The resident, who did not wish to be named, told the Times that heavy rain had effectively cut off the pedestrian passageway under the railway line.

Highlighting what she claimed was a frequent occurrence, she added that it made it difficult for schoolchildren and rail commuters to negotiate the route.

Several Facebook users took to the site to express their frustration, with many appealing to the relevant authority to resolve the situation.

East Antrim MLA Stewart Dickson indicated that he had asked both Translink and NI Water to look at “temporary pumping of water in order to keep subway open for pedestrians”.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development confirmed that it was “not a rivers issue”.
