Yasmin speaks up for environment

LARNE girl Yasmin McNeill has won the borough heat of province-wide public speaking competition, Environmental Youth Speak.

The 10-year-old Moyle Primary School pupil won over the judges during her presentation in the Larne council chamber recently and will contest the final, featuring primary school pupils from all over Northern Ireland, to be held at the end of the month in Magherafelt.

The competition, which is now in its twelfth year, is aimed at raising awareness of environmental issues among children. This year’s topic is: “My rubbish – is it a waste or resource?”

Congratulating Yasmin, Larne council’s environmental education officer Barry Tapster said: “We had a very high standard of speakers this year, with all the pupils demonstrating a great deal of knowledge about environmental issues: I think that adults could learn a thing or two from them. Yasmin was a most deserving winner of the local heat and we all wish her well in the final.”
