Miss Doherty, the head of year for the pupils making their start at the Grammar, said: “Friday, August 29th was the first official day for our new Year 8 pupils at Limavady Grammar School. “The day began at 10.30am when pupils were dropped off at the entrance by some nervous looking parents only to be greeted by 20 of our enthusiastic Year 14 pupils who had kindly volunteered to look after our new year group for the whole day.

“To begin with, pupils spent the first half hour of the day, 10.30 -11.00am, with their Form Teachers getting to know each other.

“This was followed by an exciting orienteering session, hosted by Northern Ireland Orienteering, and including our very own former teacher, Mr Anthony McGonigle.

“It was a pleasure to have him back. There were three activities bustling with excitement: the maze, the cones and the loops and our pupils were exhausted at the end and just ready for the barbecue lunch at 1pm which was served in the assembly hall, thanks to: Miss Wendy Archibald, Mrs Linda McFarland and, again, some of our Year 14 pupils.

“Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their hotdogs, crisps, chocolate and fruit and we had time to relax and chat before the last session of the day. Finally, at 1.45pm, we split into two groups, spending half an hour enjoying team games and half an hour doing Drama in the Assembly Hall. “There was a lot of noise and screaming to be heard around the school as our new Year Eight pupils engaged in all the fun.

“I would like to thank all our staff who contributed in any way to this busy, exciting day, particularly: the Form Teachers, the PE staff, the HE staff, Mr Bogle, Miss Craig and of course, Mrs O’Brien for her crazy drama session.

“I would also like to thank Kelly’s Meats of Eglinton, Superflora and Qualivend for their very generous donations. It was greatly appreciated by all our pupils and staff.

“Finally, the day would not have been possible without the enthusiasm, initiative, skill and mentoring of our 20 Year 14 volunteers. Thank you so much for all your help. Best of luck to all the new Year Eight pupils at Limavady Grammar School 2014!”
