Yellow duck project comes to Coleraine!

When a Coleraine Times reader found a little yellow knitted duck sitting on an electrical box in Stone Row, she first thought a child may have dropped it out of their pram - but a closer look revealed that the bright yellow duck was actually part of a world wide campaign.

The Little Yellow Duck Project is a global initiative highlighting the life-saving random acts of kindness of blood, bone marrow, and organ and tissue donation.

The duck found in Coleraine town centre, had a little note attached. It read: ‘My name is George, please register me at thelittleduckproject.org’.

We contacted the founder of the project, Emma Harris, who is from Pewsey in Wiltshire. Emma explained: “I set the Little Yellow Duck Project up in memory of my best friend, Clare Cruickshank, who was awaiting a double lung transplant for cystic fibrosis, a condition that I also have, and which I have now lost numerous friends to due to the shortage of donors.

“The project has gone crazy since I launched it in April this year and we now have around 750 duck reports from 28 countries worldwide!

“The Project involves people around the world handcrafting little yellow duck gifts as random acts of kindness that are left in public places for others to find. A special tag on each one invites the finder to take their gift home to brighten their day and to visit this website to register where they found their gift. We hope that the stories and information found here will encourage them to pledge their own random act of kindness by registering to donate blood, bone marrow, organs tissues,” explained Emma.

The duck found in Coleraine is one of only two registered in Northern Ireland, according to Emma.
