Yellow line mistake leads to motorist amnesty

A gaffe by a DRD contractor in a busy Lurgan street has meant traffic wardens are being forced to resist the urge to ticket motorists who are parked on double yellow lines there.

Parking attendants have been instructed to give good grace to drivers parking in North Street after a contractor sprayed double yellow lines on the road instead on single yellows.

The ‘MAIL’ was contacted by a reader who said: “There are new double yellow lines in North Street but people still parking on them.

“My wife was in town today waiting for me. She was talking to a traffic warden who said the double yellow lines had been suspended and wardens were not to go down the street or book anyone.”

A DRD spokeswoman confirmed there had been a mistake.

The spokeswoman said: “During some refurbishment work in North Street, a contractor painted double yellow lines instead of the correct single yellow lines.

“The contractor has been informed and will reinstate the single yellow lines in due course and traffic attendants will again enforce this area.

“There are no plans to introduce double yellow lines here.

“TransportNI would like to apologise for any confusion and expected this work to be completed by the end of last week.”
