The Mayor, Alderman Billy Ashe, hosted a reception for the voluntary organisation which was established locally in 1873 and works with children, young people, families and community.

Underpinned by Christian principles, Carrickfergus YMCA responds to local needs and seeks to share and learn from being part of a national and international movement.

One of the highlights of 2013 was the official opening of the £1.2million purpose-built facility at Irish Quarter West. It features activity rooms, a training kitchen, arts and crafts area, multi-purpose hall, office space, youth centre and coffee bar. The site also houses a pregnancy resource centre, youth information point and a health hub operated by the Public Health Agency.

Meanwhile, new programme for young people is getting under way at Carrickfergus YMCA on Sundays from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. Aimed at the 11 to 25 age group, activities will include:

Challenge Night – Can you take the heat to become the next YMCA Champion and win the overall trophy?

Fantasy Football League – Can you be the best manager within Carrick and win the new Trophy that Alex Ferguson always wanted?

Board Of Consequences – The only game that good or bad things can happen to you.

Drums/guitar lessons – Do you want to be the next music sensation?

Furthermore, Carrick YMCA will be running a ‘Cook It’ programme on a Monday from 6.30 to 9.30pm in which “you could be the next master chef”. Those interested should contact 07884357600 or call into the YMCA.
