Paul John Joseph Whitla, Hillcrest Manor, Craigavon, was given 160 hours for the theft of perfume valued at £94 from Debenhams on April 9 this year.

A barrister for Whitla said that his client still maintained that he did not know what his brother was doing.

Whitla’s brother had pleaded guilty at a previous court to the theft of the perfume.

When police contacted the defendant he admitted he had been with his brother on the day.

He already had a suspended sentence hanging over his head.

District Judge, Mrs Bernie Kelly, said Whitla was in court by virtue that he did nothing to stop his brother.

“You just can’t turn a blind eye,” she added.
