Young Cullybackey pipers are taking on the world

CULLYBACKEY Pipe Band Grade 4A had an outstanding performance at the World Pipe Band Championships earlier this month.

They secured a solid sixth place overall at the August 13 event where they were up against some of the top Grade 4A bands in the world.

The local band, most of which is made up of children aged from 11 years and upwards, held their nerve and qualified for the final.

After they qualified the young band’s excitement mounted further when the senior band Grade 1 qualified as well.

The young people held their nerve further as they waited for their final with the help of Pipe Major Warren Robinson and gave an outstanding performance with a deserved sixth place overall and an outstanding third place in drumming.

As one of the youngest bands going into the circle, the crowds of spectators were very much behind the Cullybackey youngsters with many proud parents standing at the side.

A spokesperson for the band said they were all delighted to bring such titles home to Northern Ireland.

The band practices in the Craigs Church Hall outside Cullybackey on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights, depending on abilities.

They have an ethos of preparing young players in the art of piping and drumming and giving them the good foundation and structure which is needed throughout the grades in pipe band music.

The Cullybackey band have brought through many World Champions in piping and drumming and this is due to the hard work and dedication of Adrian Hoy and his drumming team and Andy McGreggor and Warren Robinson and their piping team.

Anyone interested in piping and drumming can contact Adrian, Andy or Warren for details of how to get involved.
