Young democrats are having their say

Young people in Carrickfergus have been showing their enthusiasm for the democratic process.

Schools in the borough have been electing their student councils, while others have been visiting local and central government locations.

Carrickfergus Grammar School is the latest to declare the outcome of elections for the new School Council.

Polling day at the North Road location saw over 600 pupils from years 9 to 14 casting their vote.

The newly elected members will meet on a fortnightly basis to voice and discuss issues arising from their peers’ comments.

Carrickfergus Grammar’s School Council was formed in 2006 and has “grown from strength to strength since”.

The following pupils who have been elected to the School Council for the academic year 2014-15: (Year 9) Stephanie Lindsay and Connor Grant, (year 10) Melissa Grant and Craig Lindsay, (year 11) Laura Brown and Cameron Strange, (year 12) Amy Laird and Daniel Anaele, (year 13) Katherine Dick and Nathan Fugard and (year 14) Lucy Sharpe and Ryan Dillon.

Meanwhile, young people from the borough have been taking part in the annual Mock Council of the European Union in Stormont.

Organised by the British Council, the event drew students from 29 schools and was set in the Senate Chamber of Parliament Buildings.

Ulidia Integrated College students discussed EU foreign policies and youth employment strategies in a debate chaired by Jane Morrice, vice-president of the European Economic and Social Committee.

A statement from Ulidia explained: “Our students represented the interests of The Netherlands and learned some of the rules of political debating in a formal environment. It was a great day for everyone.”

Closer to home, members of Carrickfergus Junior Council enjoyed a visit to the Town Hall where they were hosted by the Mayor, Alderman Charles Johnston.
