Young entrepreneurs learn the tricks of the retail trade

WALLACE High and Friends School students recently traded at Bloomfield Shopping Centre along with other local schools participating in the Young Enterprise Northern Ireland's Company and Team Programmes, which are funded by the Department of Education and supported by Royal Mail.

With advice from local business volunteers, the pupils set up and run a business to manufacture and sell products to learn about running a business first-hand. They elect a board of directors from amongst their peers, raise share capital, and market and finance a product or service of their own choice. At the end of the year they liquidate the company and present a report and accounts.

A wide range of products were on sale, including a variety of gift ideas for Valentine's Day.

This year's winners included a team from Friends' School, 'F.A.M.E', who won the Product and Innovation Award.

Also trading were three student companies from Wallace High School, 'Guddy 2 Shoes', 'High Flyers' and 'Spark'.

The trade fair is the next step in the Company of the Year Competition. Judges from the local business community were on hand to evaluate each company, and this evaluation, along with the interviews the students will undergo to pitch their company, will help determine regional winners in 2010.

A number of organisations sponsored the trade fair including Royal Mail, Bloomfield Shopping Centre, North Down Borough Council and First Trust Bank.
