Coyle was seen hitting the man as a result of the fight, the court heard, and the man sustained a fractured cheek bone. Coyle was taken to the police station where he admitted being in a fight but denied assaulting the injured party.

Speaking in court on Tuesday, Coyle’s barrister said it was accepted that his client caused injury to the victim because of a fight.

“Both parties ended up on the ground and other youths got involved and assaulted the injured party,” he said. “There were other people involved in the assault towards the end of the fight.

“The [pre-sentence] report outlines that he is sorry for what has happened and is embarrassed and regrets the injuries that were caused.”

The defence said Coyle had been diagnosed with ADHD which resulted in communication problems and that he also had type one diabetes.

District Judge, Barney McElholm, said: “The only thing I would say to this young fool is that if he continues to ignore his doctor he will be dead by the time he is 45. He is a Type One diabetic and if he doesn’t obey the health regime set up for him he will shorten his life span.”

Judge McElholm deferred sentence on Coyle for six months and ordered him to pay 1,500 compensation to his victim.
