Young people colour their world with inspirational graffiti project

Young people, aged between nine and 16-years-old, recently took part in a unique project to design a mural as part of a graffiti art project in partnership with local graffiti artists ‘Urban Vizulaz’.

The first of its kind at Newbuildings youth Club, it brought creativity, imagination and a sense of ownership and achievement to the young people involved. The mural captured the interests, sports and recreational activities the young members are involved in within their community and youth club, including sports like football and activities like the Music Promise programme, arts, crafts and a dance programme.

Ryan McGee, the Western Education and Library Board’s youth worker at Newbuildings, said: “This is a unique piece of work and captivates all that young people in this community stand for, which is passion, commitment and imagination. The project aimed to bring people together to try something new and innovative; it has certainly worked. All involved deserve a lot of credit and I am very proud of them.”

Graffiti artist Donal O’Doherty, said: “They were a great bunch and very enthusiastic about the whole process.”
