Young people get right behind European bid

The Mayor, Elisha McCallion, has invited pupils to a special event highlighting how our young people can get involved in the bid for the title of European Youth Capital 2019.

A successful EYC 19 bid will highlight the council area as one of Europe’s most progressive and enlightened places for young people to live, and speaking after the event, Mayor McCallion said she was keen to engage local school children in the campaign.

To secure the title of European Youth Capital would be a fantastic opportunity for the city and district, and I really want to see local young people actively involved as champions in this campaign.

“Our district has a very young population and we hope to gauge their ideas and vision for the bid, which will ultimately inform the development of youth policies in locations across Europe.

“It was great to hear the positive input and innovative ideas of the pupils here today and to see the level of enthusiasm for the bid,” said the Mayor.

She said local young people have a pivotal role to play in securing the title for the Londonderry and Strabane area.

“I think our young people have so much to offer and I would like to see all local schools playing an active role in securing the title.”

Pupils from post primary schools across Derry, Strabane and outlying areas such as Omagh and Limavady all attended the event in the Guildhall showcasing ways to become champions of EYC 19. Feedback from the young people taking part will now steer the EYC 19 bid.
