Young people shine at St John Ambulance Awards

TWO Cadets from Ballyclare were among almost 20 volunteers with St John Ambulance Northern Ireland who were rewarded for their achievements at a recent Presentation of Awards held in Hillsborough Castle.

Sixteen young people were given awards and six other volunteers were rewarded for their years of voluntary service to the community and the charity.

The Knight Commander of the Order of St John, Sir William Hall, presented Grand Prior Certificates to 15 St John Ambulance Cadets, including Andrew Owens and Ryan Tweedie from the Ballyclare Q Division.

The Grand Prior Certificate is the highest honour a St John Ambulance Cadet can achieve. In order to receive the certificate, each recipient must have shown at least three years of sustained effort studying 24 different subjects including first aid, communication and working in the community.

Commenting on the achievements of all the volunteers, Sir William Hall said: “I have had the pleasure of presenting awards to our dedicated volunteers on a number of occasions in my role as Knight Commander, but the number of young people receiving accolades today, makes this one quite special.

“I am delighted to be able to present the awards and congratulate all the recipients who are making a difference throughout the province in promoting expertise in first aid skills.”

St John Ambulance Northern Ireland has 750 adult volunteers who deliver thousands of hours of service each year. The charity embraces all sections of the community and through its youth section offers a wide range of activities to over 1,000 young people under the age of 25.
