Young Reserves 'crues' to victory

COLERAINE Reserves got back to winning ways on Saturday, with a 2-1 win over Crusaders Reserves.

The Showgrounds second string were defeated midweek at Cliftonville, but put in a good performance on Saturday to seal a victory.

Crusaders put Coleraine under pressure for the opening 20 minutes of the tie, but the Coleraine defence of Wells, Wilson, Quinn, Steele and O’Neill held firm.

Nigel Turner opened the scoring with a superb strike from 25 yards. The Castlerock forward hit an unstoppable volley to put his side in front.

The second half was a more even affair, with both sides having their fair share of the ball.

Crusaders grabbed an equaliser through a poor clearance from Coleraine, but the home side battled on in search of a winner.

Ryan Doherty was the toast of the Showgrounds when he was on the end of a long clearance from the Coleraine defence, the nippy forward’s strike ensured his side claimed all three points.

Reserves boss Aaron Forgrave was pleased with the display: “Myself and Steven (Quinn) were very pleased after Saturday’s game. Crusaders bombarded us for the opening 20 minutes but we held on.

“We met Cliftonville last Tuesday night, they had two or three first teamers and that always makes a difference.

“We are the youngest team in the league. When other sides don’t have first teamers we can compete with them, as we showed against Crusaders on Saturday. First team players make a huge difference, but unfortunately we haven’t had that luxury in recent games.”

The Reserves will take on Portadown tonight (Tuesday) at Coleraine Showgrounds, the game has a 7.45 kick off, they travel to Crusaders on Friday night.
