Young vandals wreak havoc in Ballykelly

VANDALS as young as nine are "torturing" an estate in Ballykelly by throwing apples at residents windows, it has been claimed.

On Sunday police were called to a house after a brick damaged the front of a resident's home in Kings Lane. On Monday night police were again called to the same house after stones were launched at a living room window. Speaking to the Sentinel the homeowner, who says she is too frightened to give her name, says it is not just her family suffering but a lot of elderly tenants as well.

"It is getting beyond a joke. On Monday night we sat up to 5am because we were too scared of our property getting damaged. Over the weekend we even had crab apples threw at the house and the police are unable to do anything."

The resident continued: "A bunch of young ones are going out of their way to make people miserable. Those apples were taken from an orchard just down the road from here and specifically taken up to the estate to be threw at people's houses. The elderly here are almost too scared to come out of their houses, it's so bad."

"We were sitting in our home on Sunday when we heard this awful bang. I went out and saw a the brick lying on the ground. They aimed for our window but missed and hit the PVC instead. It'll cost about 150 to fix."

"On Monday evening I was weeding the garden when I heard the stones being threw at the house. We had to dial 999 and luckily enough he police were out right and quick."

Police attended the estate and spoke to a number of people but the homeowner in question says more needs to be done to stop anti-social behaviour in the area.

"This type of behaviour is going on and on in the estate and something needs to be done to put an end to it. I was told by police that my house was situated in a bad area but what can I do about that? I am not going to move. They are not going to drive us out of our home."

SDLP Councillor Michael Coyle says any form of anti-social behaviour within estates was worrying.

"Anti-social behaviour in a lot of estates in the Limavady area is very much prevalent and something that is worrying. It needs to be addressed.

"If police and all relevant authorities come together and start sharing information a solution came be found, not just in Ballykelly but throughout Limavady. The public can also help by passing on the details of anyone indulging in anti-social behaviour, no matter how small they think it might be."

Councillor Coyle continued: "Only with the help of the public, and the work of the police and relevant authorities can we address this problem."

A PSNI spokesperson confirmed that two people were spoke to in relation to an incident on Monday night at Kings Lane.
