Police are warning young people about the dangers of climbing on roofs following what they described as ‘a number of reports in relation to a primary school in Moyraverty’.

On a number of occasions youths have been seen climbing on to the roof of St Brendan’s Primary School. Damage has been caused to tiles and other parts of the roof.

Constable Kevin Crossey said: “We are very concerned that someone is going to be injured if this activity continues. Not only are the young people causing damage to the school, the cost of which has to be met by the school and takes money away from other resources, but they are taking real chances with their safety.

“We are asking young people to stay away from the school and also asking parents to speak to their children about the dangers of climbing on to roofs and also the consequences of becoming involved in crime.

“We would also ask anyone who observes any suspicious activity around schools to contact us on 101.”

Mrs Lisa French, acting principal at St Brendan’s said: “Police are investigating an incident in which three youths entered the school premises and caused substantial damage to the roof.”

She said they were engaged in potentially dangerous activities and called on parents to be vigilant and for neighbours to report suspicious activity to police.
