Your say on leisure service to be revealed

THE future of Waves and Craigavon leisure centres will take another step forward tomorrow (Friday) when results of a council survey are to be announced.

Last year the council undertook one of the biggest consultation projects in its history.

A survey asked the borough's residents and users of the three leisure centres for their views on the way forward.

People have been asked to consider refurbishment of the existing centres or alternatively the building of a new state-of-the-art centre at the balancing lakes in Craigavon.

Around 30million has been set aside by the council for the project.

Councillors are set to be informed tonight of the results of the survey and the recommendations of the consultants. A press conference will be held tomorrow.

The consultants carried out substantial consultation including a survey, discussion groups and face-to-face questionnaires the centres and at various shopping centres in the borough.

Petitions to retain both Cascades and Waves were also received by the council and the 'MAIL' has been inundated with calls, letters and emails about the scheme.

Over 1,000 surveys were received by the council and early indications were said to be split down the middle for either the new centre or refurbishment.

The recommendations from tonight's special meeting will be presented to a full council meeting in April where a decision will be made in principle.

Once a decision is made and tenders are invited, these will then go before the new amalgamated RPA council for final decision. It's thought the project could begin by 2013.
