Your town, your family and this borough should be very proud of you

COLERAINE’S Caring Caretaker, Davy Boyle MBE, was brimming with pride after meeting Prime Minister David Cameron last week.

Mr Cameron’s personal assistant set up the meeting after he heard about Davy’s fundraising efforts during planning meetings in the run up to the Prime Minister’s visit.

On Wednesday morning, Mr Cameron took time out of a hectic schedule to meet Davy in the Town Hall, telling him that “your town, your family and this borough should be very proud of you”.

The PM also praised Davy for his military service of some 24 years.

Davy was still brimming with pride when we spoke to him on Wednesday afternoon.

“I was told last week that there would be a VIP coming to the Town Hall, but I never thought it would be the Prime Minister given that the Olympics were in full flow, “ admitted Davy.

Mr Cameron spent five minutes with Davy asking him about his military service and commending him on his long running efforts for charity.

Davy has been fundraising for various charities since 2002.

In that time he’s raised over £360,000.

Most of this money has been raised through his annual Christmas sit out.

“This was one of my proudest moments,” said a thrilled Davy.

“Meeting Mr Cameron is up there with receiving my MBE from Her Majesty the Queen.

“I feel really honoured that Mr Cameron took time out of a busy schedule to speak to me, it was a very very proud moment.”

As part of the meeting Mr Cameron asked Davy how he got the motivation to continue his fundraising efforts. “That was a simple question to answer,” said Davy. “Dedication and hard work is what you need.

“All I have to do is think about all the people I have helped and that motivates me to keep going.”

Davy’s grandson Oliver McCrellis also met the VIP visitor.

As Mr Cameron was leaving the Town Hall, he patted Oliver on the head and told him that he too should be proud of his grandfather.
