Youth centre seeks volunteers

LOCAL people with an interest in working with children and teenagers are being offered an opportunity to get some experience.

The Knockagh Youth Centre in Greenisland, which has just launched its programme for the new school term, is appealing for volunteers to help run activities for seven to 17-year-old participants.

Accredited training will be provided and the minimum commitment is just a couple of hours per week.

Youth support worker Maggie Watson said: “It looks great on your CV if you have done voluntary work - any employer likes you to have done some, but in particular if you are interested in youth work a year or two’s experience in a youth centre goes a long way.

“We offer training through the Education and Library Board up to OCN level three in youth work, plus workshops on bullying, sport, arts and crafts, working with young men and so on and we find that when our volunteers put what they have done here on a CV, they tend to get the job.”

Activities at Knockagh run from 6.30 to 9.30pm on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday each week. Volunteers must be aged 18 or over and are asked to commit to at least half a session per week.

Individuals with an interest in sport, gardening or arts and crafts are particularly welcome to apply.

The youth centre can be contacted on 9036 5607.
