Youth group at work on project

BALLYCASTLE'S new Gaelic-speaking youth group for 13-19 year olds is putting the final touches to their first project, a mural-style artwork called 'éiri m"r'.

‘We got the idea for our mural from the 10 year anniversary of Gaelscoil an Chaistil. We have included our names and artwork based on our culture and the area,’ says youth member Eimear N Dhonnghaile, ‘it was great craic doing the art project.’

The group are part of ‘gras’ who run Gaelic-speaking youth clubs throughout Ireland.

‘gras in Ballycastle is all about bringing these young Gaelic speakers together and giving them the opportunity to find out about the value of the Gaelic language in their own lives, exploring their heritage and culture as well as doing something positive to be a valuable part of this community’ says youth leader and Gaelic speaker Deirdre Goodlad

Another member and past-pupil of Gaelscoil an Chaistil, Aoibheann Nc Fhionnlaoich agrees. ‘We want our projects to be worth doing and for people to know that we care about our community.’

The young people hope to display their artwork in the town shortly.
