Zomba Action Project holds AGM

William spoke of the generosity of the Coleraine Borough community which had enabled ZAP to undertake projects in Zomba, southern Malawi, to the value of some £450,000 over the past nine years.

In his report he spoke ot the “big challenge” he took on as chairman four years ago.

“During my term of office, over £200,000 has been allocated to many projects such as water and sanitation, educational help to schools, provision of drugs to hospitals, housing for the elderly, goat farming, support to women’s group, sport, recereation and latterly fish farming,” he said.

Cllr King commended the ZAP fundraisers and supporters.

“It is only through a personal visit to Zomba that one can see the great need and recognise the poverty and lack of so much, compared to what we have here.

“My own overwhelming impression of the people in Zomba is that 80% are really poor and we are among the 20% of the world’s richest people. Materialistic culture has affected us all. If we have what we need, we should be content. But in Zomba, where they have so little, they are a happy and contented people, appreciating all the help and support they receive from ZAP.

“They rely on their Christian faith, as is evident when visiting them at church, schools, hospitals and work.

“I leave you with these thoughts - From what we get, we can make a living; what we give however makes a life,” he concluded.

Both Cllr King and Terry spoke of their determination to continue alleviating need in Zomba through the good work of ZAP and the continuing contribution from the community.
