Wellington edged out, while Newington see off Donard

Wellington Rec lost by a single goal to Portaferry Rovers as two of Division 1B’s unbeaten sides went head to head on Saturday.

The all-important goal came after just five minutes when Roy Wilson got round the back of the Rec rearguard.

Portaferry had the edge in the opening session but after the break the Millbrookers looked the better side and were unlucky not to secure the point they deserved as Dean Shaw’s effort fizzed agonisingly wide, while a left-foot volley from sub Paul McCann hit the bar.

Over at the Knowe, Magheramorne, Newington Rangers made it two 1-0 wins on the bounce, with Geordie Lynn’s side moving up to fourth place in 1C after this victory over Donard Hospital.

Darren Anthony got the goal midway through the first half.

Rangers’ manager, Lynn, told the Times: “It should have been so many more. We were all over them from start to finish; they defended for 90 minutes and their keeper was unbelievable, pulling off brilliant saves from Jonathon Roxborough, Raymond Lusty and Paul Tumilty.

“I’m really pleased with the way things are moving at the club – things are certainly going in the right direction.”
