No sign of a new dawn for struggling Kilroot Rec

There’s no sign of a new dawn for Kilroot Rec in 2014 as they rang in the new just as they had rang out the old, with a 5-0 home defeat to Division 1C pace-setters Portaferry Rovers.

It wasn’t one of Kilroot’s worst days, their youngsters showed a lot of heart and character and, who knows, if they can find some experienced players, there might be still time to turn things around.

Rec started promisingly enough, with Johnny McFetridge demanding a good save from the Portaferry custodian.

However, it appeared a case of Kilroot disturbing a hornet’s nest asthe visitors went straight down the field to open the scoring from the penalty spot.

The breaks just didn’t seem to be going Kilroot’s way – with appeals for offside on Rovers’ second goal waved away.

There was no controversy surrounding Portaferry’s third two minutes from the break.

While Portaferry three up at the break, were already ‘home in a boat’, Kilroot at least were competitive in the second session with Jamie Wright and Bradley Spence going close. But Rovers finished on a double, with two goals inside a minute right at the death.

On Saturday, Kilroot travel to Bangor Swifts.

The management, committee and players of Kilroot Rec FC would like to thank Chris Blayney for all his efforts over the past couple of seasons; the defender now unavailable due to new work commitments.

Kilroot Rec: Priestly – Brennan, McAuley (J Wright), J Smylie, Blayney, Steele, Sands (PT Aston), McDonnell (D Aston), Logan, McFetridge, Spence.
