Joy for Garvey Fifths as they earn a hard fought win

Lisnagarvey Fifths came out on top after a hard fought encounter with Annadale at Lough Moss on Saturday.

Despite starting very strongly and creating five or six good chances in the first fifteen minutes, Garvey found themselves 1-0 down to an excellent finish by Annadale’s Stephen Galway. Rupert Pinion equalised a few minutes later after a goalmouth scramble following good work by Peter Richardson. A cheap turnover in midfield led to Annadale’s second goal but as before, Garvey equalised shortly afterwards through a simple finish at the far post by Paul Bonar. Garvey erred again with the ball in their own defensive zone and were punished for the third time by Annadale to make it 3-2 to the Dale. Paul Bonar then got on the end of a firm Peter Richardson cross to deflect in neatly for 3-3. Bonar nearly got another shortly after from another Richardson “howitzer” but unfortunately the ball hammered back off the crossbar with the keeper well beaten.

With a few minutes remaining Garvey were awarded a stroke after a heavy foul in the circle and Mark Surgeon put the resulting stroke away with aplomb.

This match was much harder for the Fifths than it should have been given the amount of possession and they will need to work harder in the coming weeks to avoid turning over the ball in crucial areas of the pitch. Ultimately it was satisfying to come from behind three times during the game to seal the victory.
