BOWLS: New boys do well as indoor season kicks off

St. Colman’s, who were promoted at the end of last season, made the journey out to Ballinrees for their baptism in to Division 1.

Ballinrees started well with Victor Millen putting them on the score sheet with a fine 10 shots to four shots win against Paul McCook. However Martin McAleese (St. Colman’s) levelled the match at half time when he overcame William Calvin (Ballinrees), winning nine shots to five shots.

With wins from Kenny Carson and David Walker, both St. Colman’s, against Jonathan Calvin and Uel Gordon (Ballinrees) respectively, this was a dream start for the newcomers and they went home with six very valuable points.

Dunluce, runners up last year started their campaign this year with a home game against Second Kilrea. It was a very one sided affair with Dunluce taking all seven points. Uel McKeeman (Dunluce) was too strong for Brian McGrath (Second Kilrea), winning 17 shots to three shots.

Ivan Smyth (Second Kilrea) fared little better going down by 14 shots to Alastair Kilpatrick. In the second half Alastair McIntyre (Dunluce) eked out a one shot win over Margaret Johnston (Second Kilrea) and Barry Kane completed the rout for Dunluce beating Nicky McCaw (Second Kilrea) 11 shots to seven shots.

Boveedy who were at home to the Marian must feel aggrieved only getting 1.5 points in this close encounter. Alan Catherwood (Boveedy) and Joe Martin (Marian) ended up eight shots apiece. Aaran Tennant (Boveedy) lost by just one shot to James Martin (Marian) while Ashley McCahon (Bovedy) won his game with Brian McAlary (Marian) by the same margin.

The deciding match in this game was the 12 shots to three shots victory that William McCaw (Marian) had over Doughie Morrow (Bovedy).

Loughanreagh, last year’s champions, made the short journey out to Aghadowey, for their game with St. Mary’s.

First up for St. Marys was Jordan Mullan who played Alan Irwin (Loughanreagh). Irwin was too strong winning 13 shots to five shots. Harold Kelly (St. Mary’s) then took on Ian Ross (Loughanreagh) but again the St. Mary’s rink went down four shots to 13 shots.

In the second half with wins from both Loughanreagh skips, Edwin Irwin and Alastair Steele who played Declan McCann and Aidan Cassley respectively, Loughanreagh have started the season with a firm grip still on the League Cup.
