Newbuildings PS has got the music

THANKS to a pilot scheme offered by the Western Education Board, the P5/6 pupils at Newbuildings Primary School have been blowing up a storm this term - with special woodwind and brass music tuition.

Keen to build on the school’s reputation for musicality, principal Chris Scholes jumped at the chance to avail of tuition for the children, who are spending a year learning the cornet and woodwind instruments.

“In the past Newbuildings Primary has had a real reputation for singing and music, so I am trying to build on that,” said Mr Scholes, adding: “My plan is to really bring the arts alive in the school and we are delighted that former principal Joan Henderson has been working with the school choir and giving of her expertise, which we really appreciate.”

The choir is tutored by Emma Walker, and the result is that the school is in high demand for craft and Christmas functions. The principal has his books full of appointments, and Mr Scholes said music and the arts were adding “immeasurable value” to the children’s education and self-esteem.
