Peter Kay is returning to British TV screens this Easter, to spread cheer amid the pandemic with a one-off return of his popular sitcom, Car Share.
However, due to the coronavirus lockdown restricting filming options, this new release shall make a very unique return to the BBC hit, in the form of an audio episode.
The comedian, who has been out of the public eye since 2017, when he cancelled a tour for personal reasons, announced the good news on his Twitter account yesterday (8 April).
Car Share follows two characters who find an unusual companionship after being paired up in their work’s car share scheme, and their much-missed banter which will provide a welcome escape for fans.
When will the episode be available?
On Twitter, Kay confirmed that the audio episode will be available for free on BBC iPlayer on Good Friday (10 April). The comedian said he wrote the “new short episode in an effort to try cheer people up”.
Also starring in the new episode is Kay’s co-star Sian Gibson, who featured throughout the award-winning series as Kayleigh, before the sitcom came to an end in 2018.
‘I felt compelled to try to do something positive’
The BBC Press Office took to social media to announce the upcoming episode, posting a statement from Kay on their Twitter.
“It's a horrific situation right now we’re all going and like so many I felt compelled to try and do something positive,” the message reads.
Addressing the creation and production of the episode the comedian said, “It’s all happened very quickly, in fact it didn’t exist a week ago.
“Obviously we weren’t able to film anything because of the lockdown but I hope people will use their imagination and enjoy listening.
"Here’s hoping people enjoy having John and Kayleigh back. Lord knows we need it right now.”
Controller of BBC Comedy, Shane Allen, said, "We can’t thank Peter enough for giving up his time and effort to make this extra special treat happen in donating some much-needed cheer to everybody for free.”
