That will all change this afternoon as gamers are given a guided tour of the new system’s architecture, with Sony already promising big things for the PS5.

Here’s everything you need to know about the reveal.

When is the PS5 being revealed?

A tweet from the official Playstation account confirmed that the hardware specifications of the new console will be revealed at 9am Pacific Time (or 4pm in the UK) on Wednesday 18 March.

Lead by PS5 lead system architect Mark Cerny, the event will give gamers an inside look at the new console’s capabilities.

The announcement also promised that the console’s new technology would “shape the future of games.”

As the hardware specifications, and even the final design, of rival console the Xbox Series X have already been officially unveiled, the onus is on Sony to show that there next console will be able to compete.

How can I watch it?

The full reveal will be broadcast live via the Playstation Blog, starting at 4pm GMT.

What do we already know about the PS5?

Leaked information which arrived via Gamestop has already revealed some key information about the Playstation 5.

On the tech side of things, we know that it will include a 8-core AMD chipset, 3D Audio and modular SSD storage, as well as that it will have full 8k TV support.

According to the linked info, it will also feature full backwards compatibility with past Sony consoles – meaning older Playstation games will run on the new console.

This is a feature which Xbox have boasted for some time so Playstation fans would no doubt be delighted to get in on the action.

Ahead of the full reveal, lead engine programmer at Doom Eternal developer id Software took to Twitter to say that the new console is “awesome”, further stoking anticipation for it.

What can we expect to see?

It seems likely that fans will get a glimpse of the PS5 itself, whether that’s in the form of a finished model or an image of the final design.

Rumours have suggested that it could involve a “v” shape – the Roman numeral for five – but no official details of the console’s design have been released so far.

It’s possible that the reveal will also show off the new console in action. While Godfall is the only game that has been confirmed for the PS5 so far, rumours have circulated regarding Gran Turismo 7 and the multi-platform Outsiders.

If Sony want to show off the gaming capabilities of their new machine, any one of these titles could be an ideal way to do it.

When will the PS5 be released?

It was confirmed last October that the Playstation 5 will be released in time for the 2020 holiday season.

With the Xbox Series X also set to land around then, the two consoles are set to duke it out to become the number one gift this Christmas.
