The UK is set for some wintry weather this weekend, and the Met Office has issued amber weather warnings across parts of the country.

Areas of Scotland have been forecast to experience persistent and heavy snow that could lead to transport disruptions. There are also snow and ice warnings in place for northern and eastern England.

The influx of cold weather is due to a mass of cold air arriving from Scandinavia that will sit across much of the UK for most of this week.

Where will it snow this weekend?

Heavy snow is forecast across much of Scotland this weekend.

From Friday (5 Feb) to Saturday (6 Feb) at 6pm, there is an amber snow warning for the Central Belt, the Grampians, the Highlands and Strathclyde.

The Met Office has warned that snow will become persistent and heavy. The heaviest snow is predicted to clear late on Saturday. Some places along the east coast of Scotland could see small amounts of snow settling.

The strong easterly winds will likely lead to drifting snow and temporary blizzard conditions.

The North East of England, East Midlands, North West England, Yorkshire and the Humber will see the cold air spread wintry showers on Saturday. There is a yellow snow and ice warning from the Met Office, with a small chance of disruption to travel likely.

The yellow warning remains on those areas until midnight on Monday (8 Feb).

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Mark Sidaway, said: “Into the weekend snow will continue across much of Scotland, and is likely to increasingly fall to low levels before beginning to move south into northern and eastern England.

“We are likely to see some very large accumulations across higher parts of Scotland especially, with strong winds leading to significant drifting and blizzard conditions at times.

“Although amounts of snow across England are likely to be less, they could still cause some problems as we go into the weekend.”
