2010 oval racing season set to get underway

THE green flag drops to usher in a new season of Stock Car action over the Easter weekend with two championship events for the 1400cc Stock Rod formula headlining the fixtures.

Both championships were originally planned for Ballymena Raceway, but the organisers have been forced to switch both meetings to the circuit at Nutts Corner instead.

The grids will be bolstered by of Republic of Ireland visitor John O’Donovan in his rapid Vauxhall Nova and also a group of visiting Scottish drivers that includes 2007 Irish Open Champion Robert McDonald.

Frankie Lynn and Victor McAfee, both former Yokohama champions, are expected to challenge strongly again with Ballymoney pair Alastair Bolton and John McMillan also hoping to be amongst the frontrunners.

All the regular classes will also be in action over the weekend including the Classic Hot Rods and the new specification Junior Rods. The popular National Hot Rods resume their World Qualifying campaign on Good Friday.

Former British Champion Gary Woolsey from Portadown, Irish Open Champion Keith Martin from Dungannon and Northern Ireland Champion Stewart Doak from Portadown will be just some of the hot rod stars searching for those valuable points that will secure their place on the World Final grid later in the season.

The programme on Good Friday is completed by the F2 Stock Car, Classic Hot Rod and Group Two Lightning Rod classes, with the Saloon Stock Cars, Group Twos and Junior Rods joining the Stock Rods on Easter Saturday.

Racing on both evenings at Nutts Corner gets underway at 7:15pm.
