A day to remember as Frank tops leaderboard

A large number of local golfers turned out to play in last Saturday’s competition. It was the first chance this year for many of them to play all 18 holes.

It was a lovely day and the standard of scoring was excellent.

Frank Mooney had a day to remember as he topped the leaderboard with 44 points. To give you an example as to how well Frank played, he hit a 3-wood into 3 feet at the 10th and he hit a drive and a 6-iron into the heart of the 11th. That’s not bad for a 23 handicapper.

It’s good to see Luke Woods back playing and in top form. He went round in one under par gross 68 and won the low section with 41 points.

Jim Carvill’s gross 67 is also worthy of a round of applause.

There are always a number of hard luck stories. Derek Hanna and Colin Kennedy lost out on countback in the middle section and Aidan Lavery suffered the same fate in the high section.

SUNDAY 15TH MARCH

We have had nine Sunday Sweeps so far this year and a different winner each time.

Eamon McAnarney is the latest winner and he had to play the nine holes in one over par gross to gain the top prize.

There were no 2’s so a very valuable pot is building up. Could it last another week? Somehow I doubt it.

MONDAY 14TH MARCH

Clifford Thompson seems all set for a very successful season. This is his second sweep win so far. Clifford is a very experienced player and, off a 17 handicap, he is capable of winning one of the majors. Wouldn’t that cause some stir around Dromore.

TUESDAY 17TH MARCH

The weather was ideal for golf on St. Patrick’s Day.

The full course was open for the first competition of the season and everyone was looking forward to playing the two new opening holes. The feedback was 100% positive.

Shane Rooney was in imperious form. He played the 18 holes in one over par

gross 70. That was brilliant golf from the Annaclone maestro.

Shane finished with 44 points and he needed them all. He was only one point clear of Gary Hazley who had to be content with winning the middle section.

Best Senior: Alex Clarke (13) 40 pts

THURSDAY 19TH MARCH

Joe Glass had a superb score in last Thursday’s 14 holes sweep. He was only 2 over par gross and that gave him 37 points.

The best score for 14 holes last year was set by Peter Hillen with 39 points.

Gareth Moody holds the all-time record for 14 holes. Back in February 2011, Gareth handed in a score of 43 points. That record may never be bettered.

We wonder if anyone will beat the score of Joe Glass this year.
