A good day for Smyth at Raceview

TOP rate scoring was the order of the day at Raceview with the trophies up for grabs being the Adrian Gribben Memorial plus the Qualifying for the Frank Gribben where the top 16 go into the Match play stage.

Eric Smyth produced the top score in the Adrian Gribben competition with a net score of 63 and on a better second nine from WAH Montgomery. Smyth (11) was through the first nine holes in three over gross which was followed by a similar score on the second nine.

Montgomery (10) played the opening nine in level par and the closing nine was made up of two pars, six bogeys plus a birdie on the twelfth.

Category one was won by Michael Rainey (8) with a net 65 and again on a better second nine from John Robinson (3). Rainey opened with six straight pars followed by a birdie plus two bogeys. The second nine contained five pars plus a dropped shot on the 10th, 11th, 16th and 18th.

Robinson was two under gross going to the tenth two where he bogeyed the next three holes, but he got back on track with five pars only to shed a shot on the final hole.

Category two was won by Neal Courtney (11) with a net 63 after having been level par gross after nine he then bogeyed seven of the second nine but a birdie on the final hole was rewarding as he pushed Gordon Bell (11) into second spot.

Bell dropped four shots on the way out but he birdied the third to be three over. The inward nine was a mixed bag as he had a double bogey on the tenth plus bogeys on three of the next five holes but a strong last three holes secured a prize. David Bell (17) was top scorer in category three where his net 65 was one shot better than second placed Robert McMullan (14).

Bell was eight over on the first nine which contained double bogeys on the 5th and 6th where as the second nine contained four fours, four fives plus a par three on the tenth. McMullan was out in six over despite a quadruple eight on the eight to which he added a second nine of six over and he double bogeyed the 11th and 17th for a net 66.

Category four resulted in a net 64 for Allan McCullough (21) which was two shots better than second placed Robert J. Kennedy (21) McCullough had a triple bogey on the par three third and was eight over after nine holes.
