A lookback at a fantastic season for Moneyslane

WITH the season now over we can look back and analyse how Moneyslane's two Senior teams finished in their divisions and how the season unfolded.

Slane‘s first team had their best season in the Club's history with all the record books having to come out and been revamped.

What a year it was as they won the League and Beckett Cup under the management of Glen Moffett and his assistant John Kernaghan.

Clifford Sterritt finished highest goal scorer with a record breaking and league’s highest total of 43 goals - his deadly finishing made many a team quake in their boots.

They won 18 out of a 24 games and only lost five all season which is some achievement. They also finished two goals better off than their rivals Lisnastraine who lead the league table the entire season until the last week when Slane pipped them to the title.

In the Beckett Cup Slane beat Queens 4-1, then a semi final in Armagh saw them get past Rovers 3-2 in a very close contest.

It was then onto the final where Slane's massive support turned out in there hundreds to roar the team onto an emphatic 3-0 win over rivals Craigavon City.

In the Junior Cup Slane were beaten 4-1 by a strong Bessbrook side but they pushed them all the way, showing that there was very little of a gap between the two sides.

In the Mid-Ulster Shield Slane beat Finn Harps from Newry away 4-1, and then recorded their highest win of the season by beating Newry Athletic 11-0 in front of a large home crowd as Sterritt hit seven.

In round three Slane beat Portadown BBOB 6-3 to progress to round four where they were stalled by Dollingstown Reserves who beat Slane 2-1, although this was still a great run in the Shield.

In the Marshall Cup Slane beat Ardmore rovers 5-3 away from home in round one but had a tricky tie in the second round with a home game against Intermediate A team, Dollingstown.

This was one of Slane’s best performances of the season and after a 3-3 draw at full time Slane were beaten 5-3 in extra time. With two minutes to go they missed a penalty which would have levelled the game but again it proved to the management staff that they have built a squad who can compete at that level.

Well done to the management, players and supporters for the big push to the double all season.

Moneyslane Reserves also had a good season with a respectful fourth place in the league, just getting pipped to third spot by Richhill in the last week.

Well done to Marty Hanna, manager and Geoff Cochrane his assistant who have brought youth through the ranks this season to strengthen the side and results have shown that it is working to good effect.

Slane finished the season with 50% of their 26 games played all season ending in wins and were third highest goal scorers this season.

As usual Gary Hanna and Gareth Hamilton have been battling it out tooth and nail to see who

could rattle the net the most and Hamilton has pipped Gary by the odd goal to finish highest goal scorer.

Slane were beaten in round two of the O'Hara Cup by Lurgan BBOB by 4-1 early in the season. Derryhirk beat Slane in the Mid Ulster League Cup by 3-2 in a fierce closely fought contest in which the locals were unlucky not to get a result from.

Well done to Marty and Geoff, players and all then supporters who followed the Reserves this season.

There will be a review next week of the junior season.
