Abbey teams win marathon relay

THE Abbey men and women swept to victory in the relay events of the Belfast City Marathon, while Conor Creen (3.19) and Sinead Murphy (3.42.53) went the full distance.

Sinead is now the fourth-fastest Abbey women for the marathon behind Gladys Ganiel O’Neill, Jenny Piper and Louise McNeill.

The men’s team of Simon Taylor, Paul Pollock, Andrew Agnew, Eoin Mullan and Eddie Cooke stormed to victory, clocking 2.22.48 to finish almost five minutes ahead of Up and Running Northern Ireland.

Judi Graham led off for the women. She passed on to Hannah Waugh, who was home from Scotland, for the second leg. Gladys Ganiel O’Neill, Louise McNeill, and Gemma Turley brought the team home in 2.52.58 to claim the third consecutive all-female relay title for the Abbey women.

Abbey also fielded a mixed team of Sean Monaghan, Michelle Bradley, Turlough Donnelly (in his first race after his honeymoon!), Paul Tyro (home from Scotland) and Mary Dallat. They finished in 2.50.27.
