Academy embark on Schools’ Cup trail this Saturday

BALLYMENA Academy’s Danske Bank Schools’ Cup campaign will begin this Saturday, February 9, with a home tie against fellow seeds Wallace High School.

The seeding system that operates for the Schools’ Cup means that 8 seeded teams enter the competition at this, the third round stage.

Academy First XV Coach John Andrews reflected: “Seeding can be a bit of a poisoned chalice; the draw means that seeds can be drawn against one and other when they enter the competition at this stage.

“That has happened to us many times and it’s no different again this year.

“The seeded teams then have to play a major cup game without the benefit of a round or two under their belts.

“I suppose it’s the same for Wallace though. They’re a good side and the two games against them earlier in the season were very close, hopefully home advantage will give us the edge.”

To launch the cup campaign the school hosted a number of its sponsors to a coffee morning, to thank them for their ongoing support and encouragement.

Assistant Coach Gavin Murray said: “We are delighted that so many local businesses take such a keen and enthusiastic interest in our team. Their support is invaluable. ”

The Academy’s home Schools’ Cup game will kick off at 10:45am on Saturday at the school’s Millar McBride pitch; all support will be very welcome.
