Academy enjoys sporting bonanza

BALLYMENA Academy celebrated a morning of sporting excitement and fun on Boxing Day.

The Galgorm Road school hosted the annual rugby and hockey matches which have become part of its calendar of events.

The crowds which turned out to watch the fixtures were testimony to the popularity of the events.

The two hockey matches saw the school’s current First XI get the better of an old pupils’ side by two goals to one.

In the other hockey match, however, it was a case of experience telling as an over-30 side defeated an under-30 XI by the same scoreline.

It was a different story in the oval ball game, however, where the youthful exuberance of the under-23 XV proved too strong for an over-23 select.

There was some dispute as to the final margin of victory, with 42-10 being put forward as the result but the scoreline mattered not a jot as it came very much secondary in importance to the enjoyment of the overall occasion.

A great morning concluded with refreshments and trophy presentations in the school’s DB Jagoe Sixth Form Centre, with the people gathered already looking forward to the 2012 version.
