Academy face Larne in Schools’ Cup

Banbridge Academy have been drawn against Larne Grammar School in the opening round of the Danske Bank Schools’ Cup.

The Academy will host the first round match on Saturday 11th January as they begin their bid to reach the newly-revamped Ravenhill for the St Patrick’s Day final.

That’s where the participating captains, including Banbridge’s Rory Thompson, were for the competition launch.

Neither Banbridge nor opponents Larne have ever won the iconic trophy of the world’s second oldest rugby competition.

If they make it through the upcoming opening round, things won’t get any easier as the competition’s higher seeds enter in the second and third rounds.

Ivan McMinn, Head of Corporate Banking at Danske Bank and John Robinson, President of IRFU (Ulster Branch), made the first round draw which included five previous winners: Foyle College, Grosvenor Grammar School, Regent House, Royal School Dungannon and Wellington College - all of whom Banbridge managed to avoid.

The draw was attended by Stuart Olding, one of 29 current Ulster Rugby players to have played in the competition.
