Acorns take third at NI Championships

Acorns Athletic Club have taken third place at the Northern Ireland Championships which took place at the weekend at the Laganside 10k.

The club, formed less than a year ago, sent a strong team to the Belfast event that attracted more than 1000 runners from across the province and further afield.

Held on a relatively flat course around Ormeau Park and the Lagan River, the course provided ideal running conditions for those wishing to post a fast time.

Amongst the Acorns AC members taking part, where Aaron Meharg, Aidan O’Hagan, Diarmuid O’Kane, Martin Loughran, Fergal Mulgrew, Bliadhan Glass, Oli Murphy, Stephen Kerr, Deidre Bradley and Darrell McKee.

The Championship structure allowed for team prizes, with the top six males or females on each team picking up Championship points based on their individual results.

The Acorns crew posted some excellent times, with Aaron Meharg the first man home finishing his race in 34 minutes and 15 seconds.

Darrell McKee was not far behind completing his 10k in a commendable 35 minutes and 25 seconds. Bliadhan Glass and Diarmuid O’Kane completed the course in 36.10 and 36.39 respectively, while Aidan O’Hagan finished in 36.48.

Martin Loughran was close behind finishing in 37 minutes, while Fergal Mulgrew, returning from injury, crossed the line in 38 minutes.

These results meant that the Acorns AC team was placed third overall claiming the bronze medals at the team’s first Northern Ireland Championships appearance.
