Adam top of the class in inter-schools’ championship

THE Ballymena Road Club – Northstone – youth section cyclists took part in their annual inter schools mini stage race championship at Broughshane last Monday evening.

The racing was very competitive with a different winner on each of the three stages.

Adam Kerr (Ballymena Academy) was the overall winner and he got off to a great start by being fastest on the opening stage - a 3.1 miles time trial- in a time of 8 minutes 45 seconds. (2) Steven Carruthers (Cambridge House) 9.09 (3) Chris Surgeoner (Dalriada) 10.00 (4) Josh Barr (Cambridge House) 10.18 (5) Emma Gordon (Cullybackey HS) 12.10.

The second stage was a 3.1 miles handicapped road race which saw Chris Surgeoner catch Emma Gordon late on to win by 8 seconds in a time of 9.58. (3) Carruthers at 24 seconds (4) Kerr at 25 seconds (5) Barr at 52 seconds.

The third and final stage was a hillclimb up Caherty road. Steven Carruthers was fastest this time with 1 minute 29 seconds with Adam Kerr and Chris Surgeoner equal second on 1.39 (4) Barr 1.46 (5) Gordon 2.34.

Overall result: (1) Kerr 20.47 (2) Carruthers 21.00 (3) Surgeoner 21.37 (4) Barr 22.54 (5) Gordon 24.50. The Brian Russell inter schools team trophy went to Cambridge House.
