Advantage Thatch as ‘Browner’ shines

There were a few shocks this week as Thatch Bar took the advantage in the League title race despite missing talisman Paul ‘Big Browner’ Brown who this week was away in Hull competing in the Lakeside World Championship Play-offs where he wasunfortunate to suffer an early exit after missing no less than 11 darts at a double in his first round match.

With that out of the way Paul put all his focus onto the World Masters where he went through five early rounds against some of the best darters from around the world to earn his place in the Final 32 which was televised live on ESPN. His first opponent on the stage was no other than reigning champion Scotty’to Hotty’ Waites but this was no obstacle to the Limavady man who quickly defeated him 3-0 in sets. In his second game he came up against the talented Steve Douglas but once again Paul thrived on the pressure to come away with a 3-1 victory to move into the Quarter-Finals. His opponent there would be James Wilson and in a simply brilliant game of darts it was the Northern Ireland man who once again triumphed to go through to the Semi-Finals of the Winmau World Masters, the player from Northern Ireland to do so since Ray Farrell back in 1985 and Freddy McMullan in 1984. The Semi-Finals would prove to be his toughest game where he came up against ‘The Silverback’ Tony O’Shea, despite matching Tony on scoring it was his doubles that would let him down here as O’Shea ran out 5-1 winner to go into the Final where he lost to Stephen ‘The Bullet’ Bunting. Despite this Paul will walk away with his head high after reaching The Semi-Final of a World Darts Tournament in his first time playing in a major event outside of Northern Ireland is quite an achievement and there will surely be alot more to come from Paul in the Future.

In the League Sperrin Flights dropped their first point of the season as Berthasfought back to earn a well deserved point against the League Champions, this gave Thatch Bar the advantage as they managed to hold on for a narrow win over Villa Swifts.

There were four 180s thrown this week by Vernon Phillips, Ali Owens (Railway Arms), Andrew Allen (Social Club) and Barney McLaughlin (Floyds A) who also had this weeks best individual leg with an excellent 15 dart leg.

Player of the week this week goes to Davy Glenn (Villa Swifts) with a excellent display winning his game with legs in 17 and 20 darts while Keith Gibson (Villa) was throwing well to win legs in 20 and 21 darts.

Highest Checkout this week was 110 thrown by Conrad Watson (Thatch Bar), the only other notable checkouts this week were two 94 finishes thrown by Jim McIntyre (Villa) and Alan McBride (Floyds B).
