Aidy wins the McMaster Cup

And it was won with an absolutely sensational score.

Adrian McAvoy, a newcomer to the club and given a handicap of 20, went round in gross 78 shots and that gave him a score of 47 stableford points. That equates to a nett 58, a mere 9 shots better than the calculated standard scratch score of the day, nett 67. Adrian won the competition by four shots.

Bertie Shaw (21) was runner-up with 43 points. Bertie has had a sensational year so far. Let’s hope that he can maintain this form.

Seamus McGrath (17) was third with 42 points. Seamus was just outside the prizes in the Easter Monday Medal. He made no mistake this time.

John McDowell (10), the competitions convener, started early when the frost was still on the ground. That didn’t put him off as he finished fourth with 42 points.

Gordon Enderson (24) and Kenny Jones (19) both had 42 points but missed out on countback.

The best gross prize went to Seamus Rooney (7) who went round in a one over par gross 70. Seamus had no less than 5 birdies on his card. Great stuff!

The President of the club, John Parkes (13), won the senior’s prize with 41 points, beating Robert Clydesdale (17) on countback.

Five other players had 41 points namely Jim Matthews (14), Stephen Shaw (19), Brendon Berry (16), David Cherry (13) and Colin Kennedy (12).

The seven players who scored 40 points also deserve a mention. They were Colin McDonald (13), Eamon McConville (18), Brian Grimes (16), Martin McAleenan (10), Robert Canning (18), William McCandless (15) and Shane Rooney (8).]

At the end of the day, everyone was asking, “Who is Adrian McAvoy?”

If he is the man I think he is, then I am not in the least surprised. The Adrian that I knew was an outstanding sportsman in his schooldays and beyond. If he has taken to the golf, there is no doubt that he would excel at that sport too. All will be confirmed next week.
