Albert holds his nerve to edge countback win

The good weather and the excellent condition of the Lisburn course led to low scoring in the two competitions which were run concurrently last weekend.

Competitors in the Briggs Perpetual Trophy (stroke play) played off the white markers while Stableford competitors played off the yellows.

TROPHY

There was a three way tie at the top of the leaderboard in the Trophy competition.

Albert Gregg (23), Mervyn Mawhinney (13) and Michael Robison (10) finished with net 66s.

Albert and Mervyn played the par threes well, both having three pars and a birdie.

Albert made a poor start to the back nine but had a steady finish on the last six holes to win on count-back from Mervyn. Michael’s six at 11 proved costly.

Aaron Marshall (3) was two over par after 11 holes but finished with birdies at 11, 12 and 13 for a gross 71.

STABLEFORD

Philip Mulholland (23), Hubert Shellard (23) and Alan Wallwin (17) topped the leaderboard in the Stableford competition with 42 points. Philip and Hubert scored 22 points on the back nine but Philip’s better finish over the last six holes gave him top spot.

Thomas Maher finished with 41 followed by John Cantley 40, Joe McCartney and Ernie Taylor on 39.

Alan Gilmore had the par of the day at the long 14th. After driving into the trees, he chipped out and was still 150 yards from the green in three. His mis-hit pitch struck a rock in the water hazard, bounced high in the air and finished short of the green. His chip was racing across the putting surface until it hit the flag and dropped in for an unlikely par.
