And Gilford side keep up top form to ensure Cup run continues

Last Thursday night, the Dunbarton A team maintained their strong early season form by defeating Second Division Salisbury 80-59 in the second round of the Senior Private Greens Cup.

With three players missing and a very tricky green to overcome, this was never going to be a straightforward victory but the Gilford side emerged victorious with a comfortable 21 shot win.

Inspired by Myles Greenfield’s four, the locals led from start to finish and have booked a difficult quarter-final tie away to Ballymena.

Myles’ rink were the highest scorers and won by 16 shots, whilst Andy Hughes’ four were too good for their rivals and also won by double figures, up 10 shots.

Conor McCartan’s four had the closest game of the night as they finished ahead by only four shots and Gary McElroy’s were the sole four to taste defeat as they faced an in form home quartet, eventually losing out by nine shots.

Whilst the visitors were expected to progress, this was a potential banana skin. However, the locals are playing with confidence and it was a fine display throughout.

Next up for the Dunbarton A team is a mouthwatering league clash tonight (Tuesday) against old rivals Belmont A in Gilford starting at 6.30pm. The locals are the only unbeaten team in Senior Division One this season and they know that if they can inflict another defeat on their East Belfast rivals, this could put a serious dent in their title ambitions.

Next weekend there are no fixtures in Senior Division One as the Inter Association Championships are being held in Carrickfergus/Whitehead. Dunbarton have six representatives in the Private Greens squad with DJ Wilson at skip and Andy Hughes, Myles Greenfield and Conor McCartan all playing third. Peter Convery and Marty Trainor have been named as reserves.

The Gilford club wish all their players well and hope that as a result of the weekend, there will be one or two players picked to represent Ireland in the forthcoming Home Internationals.
