Andrew takes the honours in pro shop event

AFTER no play on Saturday the course was declared fit for play on Sunday.

The Pro-Shop Sweep, run by professional Peter Hanna, provided the big golfing focus at the weekend.

On the Sunday it was dry and pleasant for playing golf and as a result the entry was noticeable bigger than usual. Once again good scoring was very much in evidence during this fourteen holes competition.

With a score of 33 points Andrew Carville snatched first place. This thirteen handicap player made it to the turn with an inspired tally of 19 points on his card. A birdie at the fifth and pars on the opening four holes set the tone for the day. A further par came his way on the eighth. A trio of pars spearheaded his challenge on the back seven. His final par of the day was secured on the fifteenth. Fourteen points on the back seven edged him into the top spot.

There were five returns of 32 points and they creamed off the next net prizes as well as the gross.

Henry McAreavey’s total of 32 points gave him the runners up spot. This fourteen handicapper was 17 points to the good through the opening seven holes. Pars at holes two, three, eight and nine led the way. On the homeward seven he consolidated his position with a strong showing of pars at holes ten, twelve, fifteen and sixteen. He had 15 points on this side of the course but he only took the honours on the back five.

Third net on the day went to Malachy McConville. This six handicapper also managed 32 points. Mal began with a bogey at the first but followed it with six pars. He set off for home with a birdie, birdie par sequence. After that he just managed pars at holes fifteen and eighteen. He recorded 17 and 15 points for the respective sevens.

Brian Scullion took the gross with 30 gross points. This two handicapper just missed out on the second net spot as well. His front seven comprised six pars and a bogey on the second to provide him with 13 points at the halfway juncture. On the incoming seven he had a quality four birdies on his card. They were attained at holes ten, twelve, sixteen and eighteen. This strong play helped him to 17 gross points on this side of the course and the gross award.

The fourth and fifth net prizes were won with similar returns of 32 points by Denis McInerney and Andy Wilson respectively.

The final three net prizes in the competition went to George Kidd, Terry Eagers and Canice McGivern with returns of 31 points. Ten other players had close shaves for prize with scores of 30 points.

Peter Hanna declared the President, Shane Magee, was most unfortunate just missing out on both the net and gross awards with his level par round.

There were sixteen twos and Alex Denver and George Kidd managed a brace each.
