Andrews injured in horror crash

NORTH-West 200-bound Simon Andrews broke his left heel and the top bone in his left foot following a high speed crash at Valencia in Spain on Sunday.

Andrews, who is due to make his debut at the Triangle course next month, was competing in the third round of the World Superbike Championship as a replacement for the injured Chris Vermeulen in Paul Bird’s Kawasaki team.

He was involved in an incident with Vittorio Iannuzzo on the home straight and was catapulted into the pit wall, causing the race to be stopped.

His injuries will be assessed further this week, but Andrews - who rides in BSB for the MSS Colchester Kawasaki team - is now facing a race against time to be fit for the second round of the British Superbike Championship at Thruxton this weekend.

“Race one was okay and in race two I got a good start and was finding decent rhythm. When Tom [Sykes] went past I was hoping to stay with him and gain some places but the next thing I knew I was hit from behind on the straight and can't remember much after that,” said the Evesham rider.

“The team are saying I am lucky as from what I've been told it looked pretty bad from the TV, but my left foot is a bit smashed up and pretty painful right now.

“I have broken the heel and top bone of my foot and have obviously a few bruises to contend with, but overall I'm okay. I'd like to thank the team for the opportunity to ride and I’m disappointed the weekend ended this way.”
