Another busy summer for Zanshin Shotokan Karate Club

This year marked the second annual Northern Ireland Summer Karate Course; this course is hosted each year by the Zanshin Shotokan Karate Club and is five days of intensive training from.

Organisers would like to thank Coleraine Council and the Jim Watt Centre, which hosted 80 students a night.

Day One was instructed by Sensei Terry Geddis 5th Dan KUGB (Karate Union Great Britain) Chief Instructor of the Zanshin Shotokan Karate Club. Day Two was Sensei John James Bruce 4th Dan KUGB, Day Three was Sensei Gary Hartford 7th Dan KUGB, Day Four was Sensei Jim Brennan 7th Dan KUGB and Day Five was Sensei Frank Brennan 7th Dan KUGB.

Saturday 3rd August was the Free Brown and Black Belt course taken by Sensei Frank Brennan 7th Dan KUGB and Sensei Andy Sherry 9th Dan KUGB, this is the only one of its kind in Northern Ireland and is aimed at students who are attempting their 1st and 2nd Dan’s later in the day. This course was again, a huge success with 90 students training.

Along with the course the Zanshin Shotokan Karate Club was honoured to be a part of a dehydration experiment by a masters student at the University of Ulster in Coleraine, this again was a first of its kind. This experiment was to test the levels of hydration in athletes before and after training.

The black belt grading commenced at 2.00pm with nine students attempting the grade from the Zanshin Shotokan Karate Club.

Each student who achieves their 1st Dan in the Zanshin Shotokan Karate Club is awarded with an authentic Japanese katana samurai sword, a plaque showing their achievement and an official certificate of grade.
