Another Coleraine rower destined for great things

Former Coleraine Inst pupil Jonathan Mitchell has just returned from Lithuania where he rowed in the World Under 23 Championships, representing Ireland.

The local lad was chosen by Rowing Ireland to partner Shane O’Driscoll from Cork, and after just a few weeks together in the boat, they competed against the world’s best at this age grouping.

After three days of racing the two kilometre course in Trakai, outside Vilnius, they proceeded to the semi finals, and were just beaten to a place in the ‘A’ final by a very competitive field.

The following day they came third in the ‘B’ final against some well established crews.

Jonathan started his rowing at Coleraine Inst under Bobby Platt and the Wright brothers, and was a member of the Queens University Senior Eight who rowed in the semi-finals in Henley 2010, in his freshers’ year.

He has now represented his country internationally in each of the last five years, since the Coupe de la Jeunesse in 2008. He won a bronze medal in the eight at the World University Championships in 2010 in Hungary.
